Southern Ridges Singapore: Choose Your Walk
Choose a Southern Ridges walk through Mount Faber, Henderson Waves or HortPark, with current diversions, access limits and daylight planning.
Choose Mount Faber and Henderson Waves for hilltop views and the celebrated bridge; choose HortPark for a gentler garden visit. Make a longer Southern Ridges walk a deliberate hiking plan, with the current diversions checked before setting off. The name describes a network of green spaces, not one short attraction with a single entrance.
For a first outing, the most useful decision is where to stop. A bridge photograph, a climb through vegetation and several hours crossing parks are different uses of your morning. Our wider guide to things to do in Singapore helps place this walk alongside the city's other experiences; this guide concentrates on choosing a manageable section.
Choose your version
The time allowances below are editorial estimates for unhurried visits, excluding transport. They assume suitable weather and open, signed routes; diversions and your walking pace can change them.
| Choice | Best reason to choose it | Allow | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mount Faber and Henderson Waves | Hilltop views and bridge architecture | 1.5–2.5 hours | Stairs, slopes and a signed footpath diversion |
| HortPark alone | Themed gardens and a shorter outing | 1–2 hours | Garden interest rather than a ridge traverse |
| HortPark with an open Forest Walk section | Gardens plus an elevated forest perspective | 2–3 hours | Confirm the actual accessible section and return route |
| A longer walk towards Kent Ridge | Walking itself as the main activity | A substantial half-day | More climbing, transport planning and changing access |
NParks describes its Southern Ridges walking route as approximately 10 kilometres, moderate to challenging, with a three-to-five-hour walking estimate. That is the operator's overview of the full route, not a promise that every connection is open or that you can cover it comfortably between lunch and a booked attraction.
Check the November 2026 diversions first
The following notices were checked on 5 November 2026. They affect planning more than an older photograph showing an uninterrupted walkway.
At Telok Blangah Hill Park, some Forest Walk sections are unlit between 19:00 and 07:00 until 30 November 2026 because of maintenance. A separate footpath below the Therapeutic Garden is closed for slope works, with completion expected on 31 March 2028. Follow the alternative route on the notice and signs; that expected date is not a reopening guarantee.
At Mount Faber Park, part of the Mount Faber Loop footpath is closed following slope failure. The park provides a diversion map. Car Park D is also closed for slope stabilisation, with completion expected in December 2026; the notice directs drivers to Car Park C.
These are separate restrictions. Do not turn a report about one closed path into a claim that the whole Southern Ridges is closed, or assume that passing an old completion date establishes reopening. Check the live park pages on your walking day and obey barriers even when a saved map suggests continuing straight ahead.
Option one: Mount Faber to Henderson Waves
Start from HarbourFront if you want the climb to be part of the experience. NParks places the Marang Trail entrance near the junction leading to Seah Im Food Centre's carpark. Its 700-metre footpath and staircase climbs towards Mount Faber; the official estimate is about 15 minutes, but take the time your group needs. This opening immediately tells you that a short distance on the map can still mean sustained effort.
On the hill, pause for the southern coastline views before continuing towards Henderson Waves by the open signed route. Use the current diversion around the Mount Faber Loop closure rather than improvising a shortcut. Keep your first objective modest: reach the bridge with enough energy to enjoy it and enough time to leave comfortably.
Henderson Waves is a 274-metre pedestrian bridge linking the hill parks. Its curved, wood-panelled ribs create the distinctive shape and sheltered alcoves. Walk across, look back at the structure and leave room for other people to pass. The bridge is a good stopping point in its own right; seeing it does not oblige you to continue to HortPark.
Before leaving HarbourFront, decide whether you will return towards your starting area or finish on the Telok Blangah side using an open park exit and onward transport. Check that exit on the park map. Henderson Road below the bridge is not the same place as the elevated deck, so a road-level map pin can conceal a climb. Avoid promising yourself a fixed station-to-station duration without checking the descent.
This option suits visitors who want movement and views without committing the whole day to hiking. It is less suitable for anyone needing a continuous step-free route. NParks explicitly lists Mount Faber Park and Telok Blangah Hill Park as having no wheelchair access.
Option two: HortPark, with an optional forest extension
Choose HortPark when plants, gardens and a more contained outing appeal most. Its entrance address is 33 Hyderabad Road and published opening hours are 06:00–23:00. NParks lists it as wheelchair accessible and elderly friendly, which makes it a better starting point for many mixed-mobility groups than the Marang staircase.
Begin with a small selection of themed gardens rather than trying to inspect every planting. The bee and butterfly areas reward looking closely; keep a respectful distance from insects and do not touch the bee hotels. A garden visit can occupy a worthwhile morning without adding kilometres. Self-guided nature walks are free; paid tours and individual businesses have separate arrangements.
If the group still wants a longer walk, consider the Alexandra Arch side and an open section of Forest Walk after checking the notices. The Forest Walk's elevated metal walkway and the more demanding Earth Trail are different routes. The latter is not an automatically easier alternative beneath the structure, and NParks says not to enter it after 19:00.
Treat the extension as optional. Identify your turnaround point while everyone is comfortable, and include the return to HortPark or another verified exit in the plan. If current barriers interrupt the route you hoped to take, stay with the garden visit. A closed connection does not need to become a long roadside detour merely to preserve a line drawn at home.
HortPark's access rating applies to that park, not to every onward connection. Wheelchair users and families with strollers should check the exact entrance, gradient and currently available path before extending the outing into neighbouring hills.
Option three: continue towards Kent Ridge
Kent Ridge makes sense when you want a longer nature outing and have reserved time for it. Consult the official Kent Ridge Park information before deciding how to connect it with HortPark. The park combines vegetation with the landscape of one of Singapore's last Second World War battles; that gives it a different focus from simply finding the next bridge.
Do not confuse its Canopy Walk with the Forest Walk at Telok Blangah. They are separate features in separate parks. NParks says only Tembusu Grove and the Canopy Walk are wheelchair accessible at Kent Ridge; other areas have stairs or gradients unsuitable for wheelchair or stroller use. An accessible feature does not establish an accessible journey to it from your chosen starting point.
Pick an exit before committing to the extension. Kent Ridge and Pasir Panjang MRT stations serve the wider area, but the appropriate choice depends on where you actually finish. Include the walk out of the park, water stops and travel back to your hotel in your assessment. A route ending on a map is not the end of your day's exertion.
For a first visit, it is reasonable to save Kent Ridge for another day if you have already enjoyed Mount Faber and Henderson Waves. The full network is an option for people who want a hike, rather than a minimum standard for seeing the Southern Ridges.
Daylight, weather and what to carry
Start in the morning if you can, particularly for a longer route. This is an editorial preference for a more comfortable schedule, not a guarantee of cool or dry conditions. Carry drinking water, sun protection, footwear with grip and a way to protect your phone from rain. Check the day's weather before leaving and shorten the outing when conditions make exposed bridges or steep paths a poor choice.
Keep the forest sections in daylight. Henderson Waves has its own published lighting schedule of 19:00–02:00, but that does not mean all connecting trails are lit or appropriate at night. The November Forest Walk maintenance notice makes the distinction especially important. If your goal is the illuminated bridge, plan a separate short approach and return using suitable open paths rather than a full evening traverse.
Food and rest breaks deserve the same attention as viewpoints. Do not assume a restaurant will be open simply because a park is accessible. Check an individual business if you are relying on it, and carry enough water to avoid making your route depend on a café. Allow children to set a slower pace, particularly on stairs and after rain.
Choose the walk that fits the rest of your trip
If you want architecture and a climb, keep Mount Faber and Henderson Waves. If your group wants a gentle garden morning, make HortPark the destination. If sustained walking is the attraction, build a longer route only after checking its connections and exit.
For a more central combination of greenery and historical sights, compare our Fort Canning Park guide. That is an alternative outing, not an extra hill to add automatically after the Southern Ridges. Leaving with time for lunch and a relaxed return can be a better result than reaching a distant final marker exhausted.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to walk all 10 kilometres of the Southern Ridges?
No. Choose a section such as Mount Faber and Henderson Waves, or HortPark alone. The full route is a moderate-to-challenging walking commitment, and current diversions may affect connections.
Is Forest Walk open and lit at night?
Check the live Telok Blangah Hill Park notices for access. As checked on 5 November 2026, some sections are unlit from 19:00 to 07:00 until 30 November. Keep your forest walk in daylight and follow all barriers.
Are the Southern Ridges wheelchair accessible?
Not as a continuous route. HortPark is listed as accessible; Mount Faber and Telok Blangah Hill are not. At Kent Ridge only Tembusu Grove and the Canopy Walk are listed as accessible, so verify the precise approach.
Can I visit Henderson Waves without a long hike?
Yes. Make the bridge your main objective and choose a suitable open approach and exit. It sits above Henderson Road, so check the climb and current park diversion rather than relying on the road-level map pin.
