Los Angeles in 3 Days: Coast, Culture and City Views
A practical Los Angeles itinerary with one main area each day, selective Hollywood time, a coastal walking plan and clear alternatives for closures or short flight days.
Spend your three Los Angeles days on Downtown culture, Hollywood and Griffith Observatory, then Santa Monica and Venice. Assign those areas to your actual dates only after checking museum calendars. If your stay includes Monday, make that the coastal day when conditions allow.
This itinerary assumes three full sightseeing days, one accommodation base and no theme park. Santa Monica is a separate city within the wider Los Angeles visitor area. For alternatives before committing to the route, see our Los Angeles guide by area. Opening and access information below was checked on 3 October 2026.
Your three days at a glance
| Day | Main commitment | Flexible part | What to arrange |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1: Downtown | The Broad collection | Bunker Hill architecture and Grand Park | Museum ticket; specific Kusama booking if wanted |
| 2: Hollywood and Griffith | Observatory exhibits and terraces | A short Hollywood Boulevard visit; Los Feliz meal | Observatory opening day and uphill transport |
| 3: Coast | Santa Monica Pier and oceanfront | Venice boardwalk or canals | Weather, pier access and return transport |
| Getty replacement | Art, architecture and gardens | A relaxed meal afterwards | Trip date, gallery availability and timed reservation |
All visit durations in this guide are editorial allowances, not operator guarantees. Add travel, queues, meals and rest separately. The aim is to protect the main experience even when something runs late.
Put opening days ahead of day numbers
The Broad, Griffith Observatory's building and Getty Center normally close Mondays. A Saturday–Monday stay therefore works as Downtown, Griffith, coast; a Monday–Wednesday stay works as coast, Downtown, Griffith. Holiday closures and exceptional notices can override that pattern.
Book The Broad first if contemporary art is a priority. Check the forecast before fixing the outdoor days, then decide whether Griffith means an afternoon science visit or a sunset-led outing. A reserved restaurant or performance should fit the area you have already chosen; avoid building the day around commitments at opposite ends of the city.
Choose a base with a useful connection to your main days. Downtown or Hollywood can suit a city-led stay; Santa Monica makes more sense when beach time and coastal evenings matter most. Keep the same accommodation for this short trip unless your flight arrangements clearly favour a final move. Packing and checking in again consumes time that could have gone into a visit.
Use Metro's journey planner, arrivals and alerts for the complete trip from your accommodation, including the walk at each end. Driving offers flexibility but also means finding and paying for parking. Neither a car nor a rail connection makes a full coast-to-hills-to-Downtown circuit a sensible extra day hidden inside this one.
Day 1: contemporary art and a compact Downtown walk
Morning: start on Bunker Hill
Begin around Grand Avenue with the exterior of Walt Disney Concert Hall, then enter The Broad at your reserved time. This gives the day a clear focus before lunch. Leave roughly 2 hours for the collection, longer if you read closely; shorten the later walk if the galleries hold your attention.
The Broad's visitor information confirms free general admission, recommends timed reservations and offers walk-up entry. Some exhibitions and events cost extra. On weekdays it opens later than many travellers start sightseeing, so use the first part of your morning for breakfast and the architectural approach rather than waiting outside a closed door.
For Kusama's enclosed Infinity Mirrored Room—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away, reserve the specific “Infinity Mirrored Room + General Admission” ticket using the official room instructions. A general ticket does not secure that experience. If the room is unavailable, keep your collection visit instead of sacrificing the rest of the day to repeated ticket hunting.
Construction affects the museum approach: the pedestrian bridge over Hope Street from the nearby station is closed at the check date. Follow posted directions to the Grand Avenue entrance. If step-free access matters, check the museum's current approach before departure rather than improvising on Bunker Hill's slopes.
Afternoon: stay with the same district
Have lunch in the Bunker Hill or Civic Center area, then walk along Grand Avenue towards Grand Park. Allow around 1–2 hours for the outdoor portion, including pauses. Notice the contrast between cultural buildings, civic spaces and the surrounding office towers; this is an urban afternoon, not a second museum marathon.
Looking at Walt Disney Concert Hall from the street does not include an interior tour or performance. If one of those is your priority, check its own calendar and replace part of the walk. Avoid treating an unbooked indoor visit as a guaranteed rain shelter.
Afterwards, choose dinner Downtown or return to your accommodation for a break. Do not add Santa Monica for sunset: the coast already has its own day. If you only obtain an afternoon Broad ticket, reverse this local sequence—walk and lunch first, museum afterwards—without changing neighbourhoods.
Day 2: a little Hollywood, then time at Griffith
Morning: make Hollywood selective
Start around Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue. Give the Walk of Fame and the exterior of TCL Chinese Theatre about 45–60 minutes. The tourism board's Hollywood guide identifies these as neighbouring film landmarks; you do not need to follow every star along the boulevard to understand the place.
This is a streetscape visit. A theatre tour, screening or studio tour is a separate commitment. If film landmarks do not appeal, skip this block and have a slower breakfast around Los Feliz before the observatory. That is a useful reduction for families or anyone recovering from a late arrival.
Afternoon and evening: give the hill room
Eat before going uphill. Allow 2–3 hours at Griffith for exhibits, terraces and pauses, excluding transport and any planetarium show. The observatory's official calendar information lists a noon opening Tuesday–Friday and an earlier weekend opening. The building is closed Mondays; grounds are generally accessible daily. Free building entry does not include the paid planetarium.
The official access guide describes the DASH Observatory/Los Feliz connection from Vermont/Sunset station. Check the day's return arrangements before ascending. Drivers need to allow for limited parking and possible road closures when congestion builds; rideshare also needs an agreed pickup location.
For a show, consult the Samuel Oschin Planetarium ticket rules: ordinary public tickets are sold onsite for that day's performances, while eligible foundation members have a separate advance-reservation benefit. Investigate available shows on arrival, then arrange the exhibits around the ticket you actually obtain.
For sunset, move the whole observatory block later and check the sunset time for your date. This is a popular arrival period, not a guaranteed quiet finale. Haze or cloud can limit distant views. Finish with a meal in Los Feliz if convenient for your return; skip a rigid early dinner reservation after the hill.
Do not add a Hollywood Sign hike to this schedule by default. A viewpoint from the observatory and a dedicated hike are different outings. If hiking is essential, replace the Hollywood morning and plan the route, conditions and daylight separately.
Day 3: Santa Monica first, then one Venice focus
Start at Santa Monica Pier and the nearby oceanfront. Allow around 1–2 hours before lunch, or more if rides are part of your plan. Pacific Park confirms that entry is free and rides and games cost extra. Choose any ride spending consciously rather than assuming a walk onto the pier requires a package.
The pier's official FAQ says it remains open during bridge replacement, with detours affecting the approach. Businesses have separate hours. Check access before selecting a parking lot or meeting point, especially for a step-free route.
After lunch, head south towards Venice only if you want an extended coastal outing. Treat the journey as part of the afternoon, not a short gap between attractions. A continuous walk creates a substantial out-and-back if you must retrieve a car in Santa Monica; consider local transport for one direction, or keep the whole afternoon in Santa Monica.
In Venice, choose the boardwalk and skatepark for activity, or the canals for a quieter walk. The official beach-neighbourhood guide explains the different settings. Allow about 1–2 hours for your chosen focus and respect residents' privacy beside the canals. Adding Abbot Kinney's shops means reducing waterfront time rather than simply extending an already long list.
If the group mainly wants sand and a relaxed lunch, omit Venice. If everyone prefers street life to beach time, shorten Santa Monica and spend longer in Venice. These choices make more difference to the day than trying to find a single “best” beach stop.
Getty: replace a day, and check the closure dates
For an art-led trip, replace the coastal day with Getty Center and give it roughly half a day plus arrival time. Keep the remainder relaxed. You are choosing gardens, architecture and galleries over a full oceanfront outing; do not retain Santa Monica, Venice and Griffith as extra stops around it.
The Getty Center visitor page requires a free timed-entry reservation, lists a Monday closure and notes separate parking charges. Getty Center and Getty Villa Museum are different destinations, so check the name on your reservation.
Access is already reduced: South Pavilion galleries 102 and 206, East Pavilion Plaza-level galleries and North Pavilion galleries are closed for renovation. The official modernization notice announces a full Center closure from 15 March 2027, with reopening planned for spring 2028. That reopening is a plan, not a confirmed visit date.
Before the shutdown, check whether the available galleries justify your chosen replacement. During the full closure, keep the main itinerary or substitute another museum day. Do not travel to the Center expecting only the galleries to be closed while gardens remain available.
Rain, Mondays and flight days: make a real substitution
If rain makes the coast unappealing, move Downtown to that day when tickets and opening hours permit. A wet Monday is more awkward: The Broad and Getty are not Monday backups. Consider the Academy Museum, normally open Wednesday–Monday, for a film-focused indoor day instead. It encourages advance reservations and lists exceptional closures, so check the actual date before travelling. This replaces the coast; it is not an additional stop between beach and observatory.
If all available dates are poor for views, keep Griffith only if its indoor science exhibits interest you. A booked planetarium seat can add substance, but cannot be assumed. Alternatively, protect the museum day and accept a shorter outdoor visit rather than spending hours waiting for the skyline to clear.
On arrival day, start with a meal and a short walk near your accommodation. On departure day, choose one local block after accounting for luggage collection, any car return and your airline's airport-arrival guidance. Santa Monica is not a universally easy pre-flight stop merely because your flight leaves from LAX; your accommodation and luggage route matter.
With fewer than three full days, remove a whole area. Likewise, a theme park needs to replace a day. For help separating free entry from the costs of transport, parking and optional extras, see our free things to do in Los Angeles guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are three days enough for Los Angeles?
They are enough for a focused introduction to Downtown, Griffith and the coast. This plan assumes full sightseeing days; arrival, departure, a theme park or a substantial Getty visit requires reducing the route.
Do I need a car for this itinerary?
No, but you need to plan complete journeys from your accommodation, including the uphill Griffith connection and any Santa Monica–Venice transfer. A car adds flexibility alongside parking costs and congestion; compare actual routes rather than assuming it saves time everywhere.
Can I add Getty Center to the three days?
Replace the coastal day with a substantial Getty visit when it is open. Some galleries are already closed; full closure begins 15 March 2027, with reopening planned for spring 2028. Verify access for your dates before reserving.
What should I do if one of my days is Monday?
Use Monday for the coast if the weather suits, then put The Broad and Griffith's indoor visit on other days. For a wet Monday, check the Academy Museum's date-specific calendar and substitute a film-focused day.
